Workshop description
What kinds of tasks can teachers employ in their quest to develop greater autonomy in their language learners? What are the specific design features that differentiate tasks which aim to promote greater learner responsibility and effectiveness from those which focus on language learning and practice?
This session aims to explore important aspects of task design for promoting greater learner autonomy for use in the classroom and the independent learning centre. It will consider such issues as: the extent to which tasks need to be ‘explicit’, how to write ‘learner training’ instructions and rubrics; task content and focus; and will look at specific and generic task design.
Presenter
Dr. Barbara Sinclair is Associate Professor and Director of the MA in TESOL in the School of Education at the University of Nottingham. Her research interests and publications relate to the philosophical and theoretical nature of autonomy in language learning, practical approaches to its development, including the roles of and relationships between the teacher, learner and teaching materials, approaches to curriculum and task design, and the evaluation of autonomy.

It is a known fact that Language Acquisition does not proceed merely with the hard-and-fast rules that students are exposed to in the language classroom. Other factors play significant roles in contributing to language learning and acquisition. Amongst these is the discourse of English language teaching and learning in the classroom. While studies on discourse analysis in English language teaching in general are readily available, we lack those that narrow it specifically to the context of the Malaysian classroom. Contributors are invited to submit chapters that focus on Discourse Analysis in Malaysian English Language Teaching. The proposed book will be useful to Malaysian English language educators as well as researchers of second language learning and acquisition as it will shed light on understanding the various processes that contribute to students’ language acquisition in the classroom. Please contact Dr. Normala Othman (meltaseries@gmail.com) for submission of abstracts and full papers.
