KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said tonight there would be no return to Mahathirism under his administration when he takes the reins of power next March.
Speaking to Riz Khan on the Al Jazeera satellite news channel, Najib said he realised that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had little choice but to respond to a new Malaysia which had emerged after the last general elections.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 - MCA president Datuk Ong Tee Keat has wasted no
time in condemning Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir's suggestion to abolish
vernacular schools. "Mukhriz is just one of the many who are now repeating the same
polemics that are a few decades old, simply because of the advent of
their party's poll," the Transport Minister said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has given its input on the issue of ex-husbands who disregard court orders and default on providing maintenance to their ex-wives and children.
The input has been handed over to the relevant ministry that would make the amendments to the law, Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Noriah Kasnon said. |

 KUALA LUMPUR: Perak royalty Raja Izzuddin Iskandar Shah has been cleared by the High Court here from the charge of abetting his former private secretary in cheating a businesswoman and her mother.
The same court also upheld the acquittal of the former private secretary, Datuk Ibrahim Zulkifli, of the principle offence.

KUALA LUMPUR, Mon: Two legal firm clerks pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to eight counts of cheating and three counts of attempting to cheat an insurance company involving RM1.7 million.
D. Balakrishnan dan R. Ramasamy, both 36, were alleged to have jointly cheated People’s Insurance Co (M) Sdn Bhd into believing that all information and documents in suits filed by several plaintiffs against the company were true when in fact they were not.

 LAWASIA expresses serious concern about the recent arrests and conviction of lawyers in Myanmar as they attempt to perform their professional duties as lawyers. It understands that U Nyi Nyi Htwe and Saw Kyaw Kyaw Min, lawyers for 11 NLD youth members charged with instigating public unrest, were recently charged under Section 228 of the Penal Code and subsequently convicted each receiving sentences of six months in prison.
LAWASIA understands that the arrests followed the submission of a complaint to the courts, by the lawyers and defendants, noting concern that the lawyers had been unable to meet with their clients in private as they prepared for trial, not been allowed sufficient time by the trial judge to cross-examine prosecution witnesses and that the defendants’ family members had been prevented from attending their trials.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — The PPP, a minor party in the Barisan
Nasional (BN), has threatened to pull out of the ruling coalition if
the Internal Security Act (ISA) is not amended before the next general
election. It is the latest party to join the bandwagon calling for reforms to
prevent the abuse of the legislature which allows detention without
trial.
