An independent audit company’s probe into the controversy-ridden government tourism development company, Pempena Sdn Bhd, has shown that the company, despite its multi-million ringgit investments, has been performing poorly.
PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) in its report, released to the press today, stated that as of June 2008, Pempena had invested a total of RM54.4 million in 24 companies but only four managed to generate profits.
The independent audit firm in its report also showed that Pempena had invested in five non-functional companies. PWC has proposed the company to pull out of these investments, a move that would incur “a loss of approximately RM20 million”.

Veteran opposition lawmaker Karpal Singh has given Chief Justice Zaki Azmi a week from today to resign from his post for allegedly admitting to corrupt practices while in private practice.
This came after Karpal claimed for the first time today that there was an audio recording of Zaki’s confession made two weeks ago despite the CJ’s denial of making the remarks.
“Zaki cannot, and should not, deny that he had in fact uttered the words. There is a audio recording of what he said in Kuching,” Karpal, also DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP, said in a statement today.

YES, we are staring at the gathering clouds of an economic crisis. Sure, economic fundamentals are strong, as government ministers keep saying, but that’s only half the picture.
The other half is the financial scenario, as economic and financial principles are two different things. The sub-prime crisis that began in the US and western countries is essentially a financial problem. But in an interdependent world, a financial crisis in one place could result in an economic crisis in another.

KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution has again tried to move the sodomy trial of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the High Court.

After the winding-up by the second finance minister on the budget debate at the committee level in the Dewan Rakyat on Nov 11, I felt compelled to write my two-cent worth of thought on our economy.
For a start, news about China’s stimulus package of US$586 billion, or RM2.1 trillion, not capable of counteracting the effect of the US-led slowdown and that the euphoric rally in the Asian bursas lasting only one day, which was Monday, are indeed very frightening.
The RM5 billion injection to shore up ‘undervalued stocks’ by ValueCap, as instructed by the finance minister, flies in your face and how much quicker, you thought, will it dissipate.
